STD's and the Youth

It may come as a shock to most, but a disturbing trend is happening in regards to adolescents and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). This trend is a skyrocketing in confirmed STD cases of kids in an age range from 10-15 years of age, specifically regarding cases of Gonorrhea and Genital Warts.

It would be naive of us to think of why these kids might be getting infected with sexually transmitted diseases, when in most countries the consent age is around 16-18 years of age. However, look at the society that we live in, where we glorify sex. It is no wonder that younger kids are getting these diseases as they experiment. Of course, many STDs are spread through non-protected sex, and how many kids do you actually think will go to a store and buy a type of protection?

Unfortunate as it is, we must be aware of this trend. A recent report from Scotland said that the statistics indicated that cases of the sexually transmitted infection among 10 to 15-year-olds increased from 249 to 318 between 2004 and 2008. Quite a large jump in that age range.

So, what should be done to quell this problem? First of all, the youth need to be educated about sexually transmitted diseases, and most argue in a very blunt fashion. No more sugarcoating the truth anymore. They must also be aware of common STD symptoms such as pain when urinating, discharge from the genitals, sores or blisters around the genitals, or any other sign that is not normal.

What exactly happens in testing should also be explained to them. It should be known what to expect if they are going to be tested for an STD, so they are not scared away by the thought of something horrible. It should be explained that tests such as a urine test, blood test, or simple swabbing of the mouth or genitalia could be conducted. Or, it could be just as simple as a physical exam.

The youth must also be aware of their options of how to be tested, if for some chance have a sexually transmitted disease, or believe they might have one. They must know about, for example, confidential clinics, where they can pay a fee but every aspect of the testing procedure is 100% private, and they will receive quick results from their testing.

The more that that youth are informed, then the better chance there is of preventing more STD cases within that age range. Knowledge is the best defense in their case, and we are the ones who need to provide it for them and give them access to it.

STD's & Kids- a scary finding of increased cases of STD's in teens is concerning parents and medical professionals. Find out how to inform your child.
