Identifying STD Symptoms

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are becoming very common, with more and more people getting infected with these diseases. Prevention is still the best way to avoid these diseases, but for those who are already suffering from such, early treatment is necessary to avoid complications. Learn about the different STD symptoms so that you will be able to seek treatment immediately.

There are different types of sexually transmitted diseases and these too have varying STD symptoms. The most common STDs are Chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, HIV, trichomoniasis, genital warts and syphilis. Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease and it is usually difficult to diagnose because there are very few STD symptoms. Some of the common manifestations include painful urination, pain at the lower abdomen, vaginal or penis discharge, pain during sexual intercourse for women and testicular pain for men.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is easily transmitted and even infected women can pass it to their unborn children. There are four stages in which the STD symptoms can occur. For the primary stage, the manifestations include enlarged lymph nodes and the presence of small painless sores on the genitals, mouth or rectum. During the secondary stage, there will be rashes with red or brown marks in any area of the body, fever, fatigue, soreness and body aches. For the latent phase, there are no STD symptoms present. When you are not treated and you go into the tertiary stage, you will have different internal organ damages, neurological and cardiovascular problems.

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus. Its STD symptoms include open sores or blisters, pain or itching at the genital area and small red bumps may appear later on. These bumps will eventually rupture and turn to ulcers that bleed and ooze. These are usually accompanied by painful urination and sometimes, flu-like manifestations. Meanwhile, genital warts are also very common and are caused by HPV or human papillomavirus. Manifestations include the presence of small gray swellings at the genital area, itching and discomfort, warts that have a cauliflower shape and bleeding during sexual intercourse. These can also occur at the mouth if you had oral sex with an infected person.

Gonorrhea is also a common form of STD with symptoms that usually appear during the first ten days after exposure to the disease. The STD symptoms include having a burning sensation during urination, thick and cloudy discharge from the vagina or penis, painful sexual intercourse and frequent urination. Meanwhile, trichomoniasis signs and symptoms are vaginal discharge that is greenish yellow in color, itching at the vagina and having a strong odor, light vaginal bleeding and pain during intercourse. Lastly, HIV is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus. Its manifestations are fever, headache, rashes, fatigue, sore throat and swelling of the lymph glands during the early stage. Symptoms during the late stage include weight loss, diarrhea, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, night sweats, chills and persistent headache.

Once you experience any of the STD symptoms that were mentioned above, it is important for you to have yourself be checked immediately. These symptoms will get worse without treatment and some of the diseases are even fatal. To increase your chances of recovery, go to a doctor for proper assessment and diagnosis. You will then be directed about the certain treatment methods that you are going to need.

When you are able to identify the different STD symptoms, you will know if you or someone you know is suffering from sexually transmitted diseases. You will then be able to have early treatment which prevents the disease from getting worse.
