Chlamydia Symptoms - Complications When Left Untreated

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and a bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Most of the time, it manifests no symptoms, that is why it is called "The Silent Disease." Statistics show that 75% of women and 50% of men infected with Chlamydia do not manifest symptoms. Chlamydia infects over 3 million people every year in the United States, which is why it is known as the most common occurring STD. The treatment should start as soon as possible, and when detected early, cure can be easily administered using antibiotics. Untreated infection can lead to infertility and damage to the reproductive system.

If you are infected with Chlamydia, there is a high chance that you would not manifest symptoms. This is because Chlamydia symptoms are usually mild and cannot be easily noticed. More women experience few or no symptoms of Chlamydia infection, although some men who are infected may also exhibit no symptoms. Chlamydia symptoms usually manifest one to three weeks after acquiring infection, though sometimes, it takes a longer period before they appear.

Early signs of Chlamydia are usually mild such as pain while urinating, frequent urination, and mild fever. As it goes undetected, symptoms can be more intense such as nausea, abnormal vaginal or penis discharge, and fatigue. Oral sex can also be a cause for Chlamydia and can lead to sore throat and other throat infections. Swelling and soreness of the rectum can occur if the disease is transmitted through anal sex. Men may experience swelling of the testicles, though this happens rarely. In women, the symptoms are lower back pain, abdominal pain, irregular menstrual bleeding or spotting, and pain during sex.

You should request for an immediate test if you suspect that you may be infected with Chlamydia since it is crucial that the infection be treated at the earliest time possible because prolonged exposure can lead to complications to the reproductive organs. Visiting an STD Clinic during this time is very vital to stop the possible growth of the disease.

Chlamydia can progress through the body if left untreated, leading to more serious health problems. Chlamydia can cause eye, throat, and rectal infections if not treated immediately. Long-term exposure to the disease can cause damage to the fallopian tubes and uterus in women, and may cause infertility in men. Women with Chlamydia also have higher risk for having Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which can cause problems in fertility.

Around 500 000 PID cases in the U.S. alone are caused by Chlamydia infection. Among those infected, 100 000 women experienced infertility. Women with Chlamydia are also prone to having an ectopic pregnancy. On the other hand, men who are infected may develop epididymitis, which can result to sterility.

Pregnant women who suspect that they are infected must get tested immediately because Chlamydia infection is dangerous to newborns. Infected persons are also at higher risk of contracting HIV. Women with Chlamydia are five times at higher chance of acquiring HIV which leads to AIDS. Rarely, Chlamydia can cause a disease called Reiter's syndrome, which causes skin lesions, arthritis, and inflammation of the urethra and eyes.
